Picking the Right Gas Grill – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, February 23, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAMarch is almost here, which means spring (and grilling season) is just around the corner. With so many Weber gas grills on the market today, it can be more complicated to buy one than it used to be. If your old grill has finally worn out, or if you’re buying one for the first time, here are some pointers on finding the right grill.

First off, gas or charcoal? Many will tell you it’s charcoal or nothing. We don’t agree. It’s a personal preference based on what you like to cook, how often you grill and how much you want to spend.

For example, if you mostly cook steak and burgers, a gas grill is perfect. You can cook those meats quickly, and when they’re done, you just turn it off and there isn’t much clean-up.

If you are more of a brisket and pulled pork person, then a smoker or charcoal grill might be best. These bigger cuts of meat are slow-smoked and the smoke flavor that comes from cooking with charcoal plays a big part. A gas grill just can’t give you that.

Also think about how often you barbecue. If you are planning to barbecue a lot, then invest in something durable and versatile. If it’s just once in a while, then there’s no need for a big, expensive grill, in my opinion. Get something simple, and you’ll get your money’s worth.

If you’re feeding a lot of people you need a larger grill surface for larger cuts of meat or a lot of burgers, dogs or chicken. You don’t want half the group waiting while the other half is enjoying their food.

You could also personally have a gas grill and a charcoal grill! Do your research, because there are a lot of brands, styles, sizes and price levels. No matter what grill you choose – charcoal or gas, big or small, the important thing is that barbecue season is almost here –fire it up and get cooking!

Best Tools for Women – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, February 07, 2017

Monnick Supply Hardware Store, Marlborough, Framingham, MAA hammer seems like an obvious choice, but is it the best tool for the job? Here are the five best tools every woman should have in her tool belt.

Drill

It may seem like a dangerous jump, especially if you've never used one before, but the best tool a woman can buy is a cordless drill with a bit set. It can help you furnish and decorate your entire home in a cinch. The key to finding the perfect cordless drill is to finding one that fits your grip and is lightweight. Also make sure that it has multiple speeds and is reversible.

Claw Hammer

The hammer is your best friend and is necessary for decorating your walls with all of your favorite pictures. However, a claw hammer is handy because it helps remove the nails that we so commonly hammer too far into the wall.

The perfect hammer should fit well in your hand; pick up a couple of hammers and try them out before settling on one. Also, be sure to pick one that's lightweight, and don't forget the nails.

Tape Measure

Where would we be without a tape measure? There is no science behind finding the perfect tape measure, just make sure you get one. However, be sure to get one that is at least 25 feet long, winds up, and has a lock button -- especially for those one person jobs.

Level

To keep your projects looking clean and straight, a level is a must; this is the only way to ensure your belongings won't slide off of your shelves. A simple 8- to 12-inch level is the most useful type, and get a two-in-one so you can check your work vertically and horizontally.

Pliers

You will probably find the need for pliers quite often and there are a couple of different kinds that we suggest you keep on hand. The first is a standard lock pliers that you can use to cut wires, pull nails and, in some cases, even fix a leaky faucet. For the smaller jobs and hard to reach places, needle nose pliers are your tool.

Already tooled up?

If you're a girl who already has tools, here are a few more additions for your toolbox:

  • Utility knifeSaw
  • Magnetic stud finder
  • Putty/taping knife
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Tool belt (optional, but very sexy -- your man will approve)

Want tools? Come to Ladies Night at Monnick Supply on Thursday, 2/16 from 5-8pm, RSVP here. For more information, contact us.

Power Tools Every Woman Should Own – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, February 02, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAWomen can take power into their own hands with power tools.

Men don’t have to be around to do general home maintenance when women are capable of doing it ourselves. Home improvement can be a daunting task, but with the right power tools most tasks can be taken on easily and efficiently … even in stilettos!

You do not need a man to hang that painting, fix the cupboard hinge or refurbish the front door. All women need is the right knowledge and equipment. A basic toolbox with essential hand tools and a few key power tools are vital in any home; make sure you know how to use them properly for your safety and to ensure the job is completed correctly. It is recommended that you also have a good, easy to read, level and a laser level for mounting items around your home.

Besides a tool box with basic hand tools like a hammer, pliers, manual screwdrivers and a tape measure, there are a few basic power tools that you need.

Power Tools Must Include a Cordless Power Drill

Drills are used for a variety of jobs around the home. There are many types of power drills, varying by performance characteristics like capacity and power. The electric drill can be used for hanging a large mirror or even constructing solid furniture.

The first power tools to buy is a cordless drill

The modern drill is powered by rechargeable batteries and works by rotating a replaceable drill bit to bore holes into various materials like wood, plastic and metal. The cordless option makes it convenient to drill anywhere. The type of bit you use is dependent on the job you wish to take on.

When purchasing an electric drill, make sure you are well informed. A good drill should provide sufficient torque. To minimize your investment in power tools, you can also look for a drill that doubles as an electric screw driver if you have the bits. A great option is to get one that comes with a keyless chuck for quick bit changes.

Power Tools Include Sanders

The electric power sander will save you time and strength by smoothing surfaces easily and effectively. Gone are the days of having a small piece of sand paper and using your arms to smooth rough surfaces. Not only does this power tool save you time, it will also protect your manicure! Power sanders are also available as a cordless option, perfect for small refurbishing jobs or an entire door.

Power sanders are very popular power tools. Power sanders still use sand paper manufactured to rotate at a high speed to provide a smooth finish on every job. The sand paper pad has to be replaced regularly, or after each job depending on the size.

Mainly used on wood surfaces, the power sander is perfect for smoothing the front door, kitchen cabinets and even outdoor patio furniture. This power tool is definitely valuable to your home, and your hands and nails will love you for it!

Oscillating Tools Are Great Power Tools

Also known as a multi-tool and rightly so, oscillating power tools can help with many jobs around the home. By changing the ‘head’, you can change its function although generally the oscillating tool is used for cutting. You can swap in round blades or straight blades, or even a sanding attachment, each serving a different function. It is one of the smallest power tools but is extremely handy.

You can use it to clean out small grooves, undercut door jams, remove trims and grouting and also to scrape off unwanted plaster. This tool is a must in the home due to its variety of functions.

Power tools can be your best friend when it comes to DIY projects and general home maintenance. Make sure the power tools you buy are a comfortable weight and fit in your hand comfortably. You also need to take the time to learn how to use them properly, including understanding how to use all safety features. It always helps to get a professional opinion from an assistant at a hardware store, so shop around and have fun taking charge of your home!

For more information, knowledge, equipment, and guidance on DIY projects for women, come to Ladies Night at Monnick Supply on February 16, from 5pm-8pm in Marlborough and Framingham, MA, contact us for information or to RSVP.

The Best Snow Blowers for the Job – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, January 25, 2017

Monnick Supply, Framingham, Marlborough, MAWinter is here and the snow won’t stay gone for long. We’ve had some snow already, but we all know that February can be brutal in Massachusetts. You might be considering buying a snow blower. But don’t run out and buy one without first doing your homework. Packed with power and built to last, an Ariens snow blower can quickly clear driveways and sidewalks with ease.

Whether you're looking at for a lightweight, compact single stage snow blower or need more powerful performance, Monnick Supply has the snow blower for you.

Single-Stage snow blowers - Clean up after light to medium storms of up to 9 inches of snow with these machines, which pull snow in using just the auger.

Single-stage snow throwers are smaller than two-stage models, making them great for sidewalks or smaller driveways in urban environments.

While these machines can only handle light to moderate snow fall, they're often the preferred choice because of their durability. Ariens offers a single-stage Path-Pro snow thrower with features such as steel side panels, robust and sturdy wheels and a protective rear guard, all of which increase the machine's durability, ensuring that it will be ready to work when you are.

When you're clearing snow, you need a piece of equipment that is able to throw snow effectively and with power. Ariens Path-Pro models feature an engine with a high output and throwing distance. Models with a 208cc engine are able to throw snow up to 35 feet away.

Another reason to choose a single-stage is because these models are very easy to service. All of the models in the Ariens Path-Pro family are designed with easy access to common service points such as the oil drain, spark plug and carburetor.

Two-Stage snow blowers - Two-stage machines are ideal for removing wet, heavy snow up to 18 inches deep. They have engines for impressive snow removal speed, throwing distance, and plow-pile clearing.

In Massachusetts where heavy snowfall is common, a two-stage snow blower may be a better option, as these models can handle any amount of snow.

First and foremost, Ariens units are built with durable, long lasting components. Also, two-stage snow throwers are preferred among consumers. Ariens is known for its durability. From its all-steel construction to fully welded serrated augers to the cast iron gear case, each model in the Sno-Thro lineup is built to withstand the work for several years.

Another consideration for the two-stage is throwing distance. In instances when you need to throw snow farther, a two stage will be your best choices. Ariens super high output can throw snow up to 50 feet.

Additionally, two-stage snow throwers tend to come with upgraded feature options like hand warmers, quick-turn chutes and auto turn, making them easier and more comfortable to use, especially during long days.

How to Buy Power Tools – Framingham, Marlborough, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, January 17, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAThis week is a great week to buy power tools by coming to Power Tool Promotion Week at Monnick Supply. With the long winter ahead, your workshop needs to be well-stocked for hobbies, home improvement projects and house and yard repairs. There are plenty of big box stores that can sell you your power tools. But, buying new electric or gas powered tools is buying a relationship. Like everything with an engine, you’re going to have to bring it in for parts and service.

But more than that, you want to buy only what you need. You don’t want to get roped into buying the biggest and loudest, you want the right tool for the job. That means, you want to buy your new power tools from a shop where you  can build a relationship.

Here are a few things to consider before you buy:

  • Think about your budget. There are plenty of tools with all of the bells and whistles, but if you don’t need them, or won’t use them, you don’t need to pay for them. Sometimes the most basic tool is the best one for you.
  • Different brands have different warranties. Less expensive brands have lesser warranties; more expensive brands have longer more comprehensive warranties. Some hardware stores have extended warranty options which allow you to extend the warranty on the tool you buy.
  • Here is the big one, power source. Cordless tools are convenient. They also cost more and are more challenging to maintain. If you have smaller jobs you may want to consider electric power tools.

For more information on buying the right power tools for your home and yard, contact Monnick Supply in Framingham and Marlborough.
