These Are the Best Gas Grills – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, May 11, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAWE GET IT: Grilling over red-hot coals satisfies a primal urge, and the taste can be amazing. But for many, smoky charcoal doesn’t outweigh the convenience of grilling with gas.

Gas grills offer instant, even heat that puts charcoal to shame. They also boast precise temperature control, which makes it easy to cook delicate foods that might be wasted on a 700°F charcoal grill. But while choosing gas is a relatively simple decision, picking which gas grill to purchase is considerably more difficult. From big brand names like Weber to the generic grills that crop up in your local grocery store every spring, there are hundreds of options to choose from.

We put some of the most popular gas grills through a battery of tests in our labs and backyards. We tested preheat speeds, recorded temperature distribution, measured assembly time, and checked the built-in temperature gauges for accuracy. Now we’ve analyzed the data, and we can say with certainty that the grills below offer something for everyone.

Weber Spirit E-310

A perennial favorite, the Spirit series is Weber’s entry-level line of gas grills. Entry-level doesn’t necessarily mean affordable, though, and the Spirit E-310 isn’t exactly cheap. This is a very popular grill.

In our opinion, its money well spent. This grill is constructed from high-quality materials and really feels like it’s built to last. Weber has a reputation for longevity and reliability, and it’s backed up by a 10-year warranty against corrosion and rust. Parts are readily available, too. The E-310 features a 529-square-inch cooking surface, three burners, porcelain-coated grates, and a porcelain-coated exterior for extra protection. If you’re a Weber loyalist or just want an incredibly well-made grill, the Spirit E-310 is your best bet.

Weber Genesis E-310

The Genesis E-310 is the most affordable mid-range gas grill in Weber’s line-up. Despite having the same burner setup as the Spirit, it offers a larger 637-square-inch cooking surface, and the overall construction is of a generally higher quality than its entry-level cousin.

Broil King Regal 490 Pro

Based on design and features alone, you’d be forgiven for thinking the Broil King Regal 490 Pro was indeed a gas grill fit for royalty. It’s powered by four standard burners and also includes a side burner and rotisserie burner for the occasional spit roast. Condiment and tool caddies on either side of the grill provide ample storage space, and the burner dials are illuminated for ease of use.

Weeds Growing in Your Lawn! – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Friday, May 05, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAWhile April showers bring May flowers, late spring warm weather also brings accelerated weed growth in your lawn. What should you do? The best defense against weeds is a thick, healthy growing lawn. However, if you have visible weeds in your lawn this month they are most likely broadleaf weeds. Crabgrass is not really appearing yet in most lawn at this time of year.

If you have a lot of weeds have you considered the health of the soil you are trying to grow your lawn in? Poor quality soil and a low soil pH value will deter healthy lawn growth and spur the growth of weeds. Apply Mag-I-Cal to increase your soil pH level to 6.0 – 6.8 range for optimum lawn growth. What about the rest of your soil, is it dark-rich in color, loose, able to hold water and nutrients? Do you have an abundance of earthworms? These are indicators of healthy soil. Perhaps you need to test your soil? What, you have never tested your soil, shame on you! Instead of just killing weeds, applying Love Your Lawn-Love Your Soil at this time will promote grass growth so weeds cannot take hold.

You can control weeds organically by applying Organic Weed Control with corn gluten, a by-product of the corn syrup industry. Apply Organic Weed Control before target weeds germinate and be sure to not apply grass seed for 2-3 months after application. Another natural way to deter weed growth is to sow high quality grass seed like Black Beauty Ultra to crowd out the possibility of weeds establishing. Raise your mowing height to 3+ inches to shade weed seeds and keep them from growing.

If you have not applied any crabgrass preventer yet you still have time if you use Crabgrass Preventer plus Green-Up. Crabgrass Preventer plus Green-Up should only be applied in sunny areas, crabgrass does not grow in shady areas. Also, if you have a thick, healthy lawn and have not had problems with crabgrass in general, consider skipping any crabgrass preventers this year. Get back to growing a healthy lawn, not trying to kill everything.

The king of broadleaf weeds is Dandelion; however there are many others out there. This familiar yellow flower does a good job of ruining a great looking lawn. Most broadleaf weed controls consist of a combination of 3 different selective herbicides that kill weeds without injuring the lawn. It is best to control broadleaf weeds when they are actively growing. If you use a Weed and Feed or Lawn Weed Control, be sure to apply them early in the morning when dew is present or to a lightly sprinkled lawn so the granules stick to the weed leaves. Do not mow for 2 days prior or 2 days after applying broadleaf weed controls.

Do not water-irrigate or expect rainfall for 2 days after application! If you choose to spot spray with liquid weed controls, be sure to avoid drift of the spray onto desirable plants. Liquid weed controls sometime work better on hard-to-control “vine-type” weeds and clovers.

Be sure to control any weeds using a product that is labeled for the particular weed and follow all label directions for best results. Avoid applying lawn weed controls into desirable flower beds and remember to calibrate your spreader and measure your lawn square footage prior to spreading so you apply the correct amount of weed killer. Taking these steps will assure you better control of weeds and also helps you avoid applying too much resulting in your lawn burning.

Do not apply weed controls in hot-dry weather. Remember to wash out your spreader after every use and spray lubricant where the axle & wheels come together. If you choose to hire a professional lawn care company, be sure they have their pesticide and fertilizer applicator licenses.

Don’t let the weeds get to you, get to them first, outsmart them with a sound lawn care plan!

Pool Water Testing Needs to be Done Accurately and Regularly – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 02, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MASummer is almost here and some folks around Marlborough and Framingham are begging to think about opening the pool for the season. It’s important to learn how to test pool water, and do it at least once a week to make sure the pH and alkalinity are balanced, and to keep your sanitizer level in check (i.e. chlorine at 3 ppm).

The Water Sample

There are 3 ways to test pool water:

  • Liquid test kit
  • Test strips
  • Taking your sample to Monnick Supply in Marlborough or Framingham to have it professionally checked.

To take a proper water sample, use a clean cup or bottle (with cap if you’re taking it to the pool store) and hold it upside down so that the opening is facing the floor. Insert into the water elbow-deep and turn it right side up to collect the sample. Do not take the sample near any return jets or skimmer opening. If possible, take the sample from the absolute middle of your pool.

Now you can take this sample to Monnick Supply or check it yourself.

Using Test Strips

For home testing, this is a personal favorite. It’s easy to do and very accurate – much more accurate than using a liquid test kit because of human error when it comes to matching up the colors and using chemical droplets.

Take your water sample and quickly drip one, dry strip into the water. Hold it still in the air for about 15 seconds (do not shake off the excess water). Then match up the colors of the strip to the back of the bottle to get your readings.

There are all different kinds of test strips you can buy that check for all sorts of things, but you really only need to check for pH, alkalinity and free chlorine. Use test strips at least once a week. And bring a sample to Monnick Supply in Marlborough or Framingham once a month to have it professionally checked – also when opening and closing your pool.

Using a Liquid Test Kit

There are very advanced liquid test kits, but for home use, just stick with pH and chlorine or phenol red and OTO. Phenol red is a red chemical you add to a small sample of water to check the pH. The redder the water, the higher the pH.

OTO is the chemical that tests for total chlorine. It’s a yellow liquid you add to your sample. The more yellow, the more chlorine.

With a liquid test kit, it’s hard to see the low end of the colors. Make sure you use a white background to examine the colors to be accurate.

Happy Swimming!

Gas Grills Starting at $400: What to Expect – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 18, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAWhen it comes to gas grills you can find a lot more manufacturers, a lot of models, and a lot of confusion. Companies like Broil-King, Char-Broil, and Weber all have a wide range of models to offer. There are also a lot of store brand grills starting around $400, many of which you will want to avoid.

These grills offer a lot of features, some are made in North America while many are made in China and you typically find warranties good for 5 to 10 years. Stick with a name brand grill and not a store brand. Support is better and you are more like to be able to get replacement parts down the road.

What to Look for in a Gas Grill

In this price range, stay away from any gas grill that has a lot of stainless steel. Stainless steel used on these gas grills is almost always low grade, 430 stainless. This kind of stainless steel holds a magnet so that's one way you can easily test for it. This type of metal is prone to discoloring, staining, and rusting. This means that these grills look great on the showroom floor but have trouble retaining their appearance. Look for porcelain coated steel grills. You are going to find that these grills are much larger than the less expensive units.

Don't be tempted to buy the biggest grill if you don't need that much space. Look at gas grills with a primary cooking space of 300 to 350 square inches and a BTU rating around 28,000 to 36,000. While some of these grills have as many as 5 burners to heat spaces over 400 square inches the smaller grills only need 3 burners.

Most of these grills have side burners and if that is something you will use (which most people don't) get it. Otherwise, there is no need to pay for it. If you do a lot of rotisserie cooking (or plan to) the rear mounted rotisserie burners are nice but the ceramic type burners tend to break easily so rotisserie burners that are a standard gas port burner are better. Don't buy more, either in size or in features, than you need.

When shopping for a gas grill don't be afraid to dig down inside to see how it is put together. It is a good idea to remove the cooking grates on the showroom floor and take a look at the burners. The burners in almost all grills in this price range are stainless steel, tubular burners. This is when a magnet will really come in handy. If the magnet sticks to the burners they are low-grade stainless steel. Avoid these grills. If a burner is going to last more than a few seasons it should be heavy duty, 304 stainless steel. If the burner feels lightweight don't buy the grill.

Gas Grills in this price range should offer you high, even heating and most of the name brand grills do. You should also get some good versatility out of one of these grills.

While you will find that some shortcuts have been taken with some of the grills in this price range you should expect at least 5 years good service out of a grill that costs between $250 and $500. That lifespan can easily be increased to 10 years with care and the occasional replacement part.

Since most grills come with warranties and since the brand name manufacturers offer good warranties and tend to actually honor them it is important that you register your grill and are prepared to take advantage of failed parts. Good customer support is something you should expect in this price range and if the maker of your grill doesn't offer it, you don't want their grill.

Spring Lawn Care: Time to Start – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, April 12, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAApril showers bring May flowers and it’s also prime time for getting your lawn off to a great start. It was cold and rainy last month, so we understand your hesitation to get working on your lawn but now there are no excuses.

First things first, pick up debris and rake out dead leaves and branches on your lawn including the few feet along the street where any snow plowing debris are found. This area along the curb may need some special attention, too much road salts can kill grass. Rake out any dead grass and apply some Love Your Lawn - Love Your Soil to neutralize the salts in the soil. Re-seed and fertilize lawn in the areas where necessary. Mow the lawn if it needs it to give it a wake-up call so the grass blades and roots to start growing again. This action of mowing is similar to a forest fire when the trees and underbrush start to re-grow lush and green. Applying Green Up can be helpful to start healthy lawn growth at this time.

Did you analyze what went right or wrong from your lawn program last year? Did you have crabgrass in the summer? Were broadleaf weeds a problem? Did certain areas not respond as you expected when fertilized? Many homeowners are experiencing too much crabgrass in summer even when they put down a pre-emergent crabgrass preventer in spring. We find too many homeowners wanting to put down crabgrass preventer too early in the spring season. If you use Crabgrass Preventer plus Green Up you can apply up to 4 weeks later than other crabgrass products, you should get better control into the summer season. If you are planning on seeding the lawn this spring, do not use Crabgrass Preventer plus Green Up; look for Crabgrass Preventer plus New Seeding Fertilizer. This allows seeding the same day.

If you are experiencing too much crabgrass year after year, you need to create a better growing environment for desirable grass to grow and not crabgrass. Crabgrass usually thrives when there are bare spots, or disruptions on the lawn from foot traffic or along the curb line from walking dogs. Poor soil conditions such as low soil pH can also lead to a poor lawn and the lack of competition allows crabgrass to invade these areas. Have you tested your soil pH? Do you have some drainage problems that do not allow grass to grow properly? What have you done for your soil lately? Adjust soil pH if necessary with Mag-I-Cal so your pH is between 6.2 to 7.0 for best grass growth.

What about broadleaf weeds such as dandelion, clover and chickweed? These weeds also thrive from the lack of grass competition and low soil pH conditions. Consider re-seeding bare spots this spring. If you want to re-seed your whole lawn this is best done in early fall. Some broadleaf weeds can be prevented with an application in early spring of Crabgrass Preventer plus Green Up provided you apply before the target weed seed germinates. Broadleaf weeds can be effectively controlled in late spring when they are actively growing and air temperatures are consistently above 60 degrees with Lawn Weed Control. Be sure to follow all label directions for best results.

Did you winterize your mower last fall? If not, consider an oil change and cleaning of the housing and check spark plugs, etc. and sharpen the blade, be safe! Use a Monnick Supply for these tasks if you do not feel comfortable doing these chores yourself.

What you do for your lawn this spring will determine how well your lawns thrives and survives this summer. While it is hard to predict Mother Nature, if a severe heat wave and or drought comes along let’s hope we can thrive through these tough times. Let’s have a great lawn year!

For more information on lawn care, contact Monnick Supply. Or, come visit on April 22, from 10am to 4pm when we’ll give you all the lawn care guidance you need.

A Cordless Outdoor Power Tool for Everybody: Stihl – Marlborough, MA

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, April 04, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, MAStihl is the top selling brand of gas-powered outdoor equipment in North America, but it's lagged behind when it comes to battery-powered outdoor tools—until now. With the introduction of its Lightning battery systems, Stihl now has a cordless platform to meet the demands of professionals and homeowners.

Outdoor power equipment is a $10.6 billion dollar market, and is moving en masse to cordless, for environmental, noise, and convenience reasons. This has enticed upstart companies and traditional tool brands—like DeWalt and Milwaukee, to produce their own lines. But Stihl has always been a gas first company. They've sold an electric chainsaw and blower for a few years, but the cost was out of reach for homeowners, and frankly there were cheaper and better tools available.

Now, Stihl is changing its tune. The company's same German engineering has been applied to a fresh lineup of three battery platforms and new tools that are sure to shake up the industry.

The brand new AI system features an integrated battery, which remains in the tool, so no separate charger required. Just keep these tools plugged into the wall and they'll be ready to go when needed. These are the smallest and lightest of the new Stihl cordless tools, and are ideal for consumers with small yards, decks, and patios.

The AI system currently includes a hedge trimmer, blower, and trimmer. The same technology and cutting systems found in Stihl's professional tools have been built into this system. The AI tools will be competitively priced and available at your Monnick Supply in Marlborough, MA.

The AK system features two battery options and four tools that are a step up in power from the AI tools. With multiple battery options, this system is ideal for maintaining suburban yards and areas.

This system will likely appeal to the majority of homeowners who want plenty of power but at a lower cost and weight of semi-professional tools.

For larger properties with dense foliage, Stihl's AP system has more power and longer run times. There are eight tools to choose from in this system: hedge trimmer, trimmer, blower, chain saw, lawn mower, cut off wheel, extended hedge trimmer, and pole pruner.

If you've got an unwieldy yard and spend hours on it each week, then this system is probably your best choice.

Stihl outdoor power equipment is only available from dealers, with the hope that means better customer experience, including more knowledgeable sales staff and strong product support. Plus it benefits small business owners as opposed to big box retailers.

Interior Paint: Benjamin Moore is the Best Paint Brand – Marlborough, Framingham, MA

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Monnick Supply, Marlborough, Framingham, MAPaint brands have more differences than just their names. They can have different chemical compositions, finishes, and intended uses. When you have a project, you need to find the best paint for the job. Whether you're considering an premium option, like Benjamin Moore, or California, or a lower quality paint, your first consideration may be the price tag on the paint can.

Once you start researching your options, however, you may find out that another factor takes precedence over price.

Consider the following options when you want the best paint brands.

High-end paints, like Benjamin Moore Paint and California Paint may cost more but they consistently rank higher for overall quality than other paint options. These top paint brands have paints that will resist fading when exposed to direct sunlight, which helps your paint look better longer.

Benjamin Moore is the best paint brand overall, according to consumers and professionals, and it offers indoor and exterior paint. The company has over 3,000 colors and a variety of chemical compositions from eco-friendly paints to no- or low-VOC paints. You can use the company's software to see how a room will look with a specific paint color, or you can download the software to your computer so you can experiment with interior painting without having to connect to the Internet.

Benjamin Moore is North America’s favorite paint, color and coatings brand known for products such as Aura®, Regal® Select, Natura®, Ultra Spec®, ARBORCOAT® and more. It ranked highest in customer satisfaction with both interior paints and exterior stains by J.D. Power. According to the 2016 Paint Satisfaction Study, Benjamin Moore achieved the highest numerical scores over all other brands among interior paints (836) and exterior stains (814) on a 1,000-point scale.

Is the Price Worth It?

When you consider premium vs standard paint brands, you may feel like the only difference is marketing. However, premium brands consistently earn higher rankings than standard paint brands, even when testers are providing feedback in a blind study. Since the testers do not know what brands they are evaluating, blind tests strip away any pre-conceived notions that testers may have because of marketing.

The bottom line is that you get what you pay for when it comes to paint brands. If you can only afford standard paint, then pick the brand that appeals to you the most. However, keep in mind that you may have to repaint sooner than you would with premium paint. When you add the price to repaint to the original amount, you may find that you will pay more to cover your walls with standard paint than you would if you had just bought premium paint.
